Global Experiences: Internships in Sydney, Australia

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained valuable work experience and had a great time meeting people from Australia. Definitely worthwhile.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Very educational internship. I worked out of a satellite office with only one other employee from my company (but still learned a lot). I made an effort to work in the main office for two weeks in another city, however I had to pay for my own living situation. I wish I would have had an opportunity to work in the main office more, where there were other departments and more employees.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Great apartment. Cleaning services once a week, and perfect location. Four interns, two guys and two girls, in a two bedroom ensuite. Tiny kitchen with a huge living room, two bathrooms and a balcony.

* Food:

Wasn't expecting as much asian food in Australia, but it was great.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I didn't feel as integrated as I thought, but maybe that is because I wasn't expecting Sydney to be so similar to large cities in the U.S. It wasn't much of a culture shock at all, but fantastic experience none the less.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Never had a problem, but felt secure with my healthcare availability.

* Safety:

Always felt safe. We normally went everywhere in, at least, pairs or a group of four. (There was four interns total)

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Sydney was a pretty expensive city. Bus/Train/Ferry passes are covered in the program.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? around 100 to 150 a week
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? It's important to grocery shop and cook rather than eat out. I was lucky enough to live close enough to work so that I normally ate lunch at home.
