10/10 Best time of my life and some of the greatest people you will ever meet. Past Review

By (Ohio University) - abroad from 06/07/2017 to 07/05/2017 with

University of Nicosia - Global Semesters: Nicosia - Summer in Cyprus

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained to be more easy going to a bigger group of people because I made some best friends for life that was definitely worthwhile. I couldn't imagine being with a better group of people and the relationships we will take forward. Just be open to meeting new people and new personalities and I bet you will have the same experience.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Professors have a well balance between understanding of traveling and studying.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

5 minute walk from the apartments

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Had my own room, as I know some others had to share, and our own washer. To get these perks, make sure you schedule your commitment to the program earlier than later!

* Food:

First and last meals of the entire program are included (which were very good). Hotel breakfasts are also included which were also good. Everything in between you are on your own.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Very! Need to learn some basic words like thank you, excuse me, hello, good morning, etc. Driving is on the left side so be careful because it is definitely not a pedestrian first country.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

First weekend I ask the safari tour guide after we park, "Should I roll up the windows?" Immediately he responds, "No no. Cyprus safe!" I traveled to Croatia and France, and Cyprus was by far the safest amongst those three. Sometimes we would say how we felt a little too comfortable in this foreign country.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Find a group of people within the program with your same interests, and I guarantee you will expand to the broader group and everyone has a blast with each other and become very close.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I spent a lot but was my choice to go to Old town (downtown) Nicosia every other day.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 250
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Take out as much cash as you can instead of relying on your credit card or debit cards.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Mostly everyone in Cyprus speaks English.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? High School
How many hours per day did you use the language?
