Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I was told when I arrived that 1 of the 2 music courses was cancelled. The professor for the remaining course was absent for half of the class (he had some sort of seminar or workshop to go to). The University knew about this, but had not found a professor to substitute teach the class. When I asked the program to refund my money (I had an opportunity with another study abroad program nearby), they found a professor to substitute for the class, but did not brief her on the course itself. She tried hard, but was not prepared to teach the class. The program was haphazardly put together. When I went to the program to voice my concerns and complaints, it was insinuated that most students would not have had a problem with it (having gone abroad to party/experience international life). Neither the program nor the University respected the students' education in this situation. After paying the program good money to attend these classes, I expected a better attitude towards customers. The Greek class I attended in lieu of my second music class was quite good. The teacher had high expectations and differentiated the learning so that those of us with some working knowledge of Greek could progress. Unfortunately, she could not make up for the fact that I had chosen this program for the music courses, which had been all but cancelled.

On-site administration of your program

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Dirty, but livable. Other students had problems with cockroaches, but we were thankfully spared. It was expensive for the accommodations (4 people in a small apartment).

The program provided Pizza Hut upon our arrival. Our trip to Athens/Rome was marginally better.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

As I could already read/write some Greek, I could communicate, so that helped. The local people were nice enough, but we were given little information through the program to help us. Being housed apart from everything didn't help with feeling "integrated."

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

N/A. I did not have need of medical attention while in Cyprus. I gave it 2.5 stars because I an answer to this question was required, but I did not have a positive or a negative response to give.

Akin to China. Watch yourself, and you are fine. Not nearly as safe as Japan or Korea (few places are).

This program gladly took my money without delivering the promised program. I felt trapped in the program. I also felt like I was flushing thousands of dollars down the toilet because I didn't get the education I expected.

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I did not spend much money compared to the other program participants, but I also did not go out much. My expenses were confined to food and souvenirs.

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

We were asked to complete assignments by talking to natives, but did not need to speak the language in class (it was a beginner class)
