Overall I had a wonderful experience with GVI and would highly recommend the sea turtle project in Greece. I wish I could have stayed for longer than just 2 weeks! It was very rewarding to be involved the the work which Archelon are carrying out to protect the populations of loggerhead sea turtle in Kyparissia Bay. About
Join an international team of volunteers and assist with a vital sea turtle conservation project on Greece’s Mediterranean coast.
Description:
Based in the beautiful Bay of Kyparissia in the western Peloponnese, you will be involved with conserving and protecting one of the most important loggerhead turtle nesting areas in Greece. You’ll find yourself involved in different activities, depending on the time of year. In the months of June and July, you can expect to do the daily surveying of nesting female turtles. This will take place on morning patrols, in order to protect any nests that may have been laid over night. During September and August, you’ll find yourself recording the nest hatching events. This is where you’ll monitor the tiny turtles as they make their way to the ocean. This program is only operational from June to early September, following the loggerhead turtle season.
Program Highlights:
- Gain real hands-on experience on Sea turtle conservation in one of the most important nesting areas for loggerhead turtles in the Mediterranean region.
- Learn about the threats to sea turtle conservation both locally and globally and how our work combats these threats.
- Be part of a passionate team and make the difference by going out every day (night and day) performing different conservation activities on the beautiful Greek beaches.
