Hamline University: York - University of York

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My internship opportunity was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I was very glad to be able to experience working at an archaeological site in a country and a city with such a fascinating history. I did not like my host university very much, but it was worthwhile to travel and see England.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My department was not well-organized, and the coursework was not rigorous enough.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I felt we were well prepared to go to the University of York, but the University was not very prepared for us and did not know how to treat us a lot of the time.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Single dorm room in Halifax College and then Langwith College

Acceptable except that rooms were very cold, flatmates were often loud at night, and common areas were not kept clean.

* Food:

I am a vegetarian so there was not much variety in the menu.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program's trip to London was very fun and informational, otherwise all other trips were planned on my own.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Since we were only there for a few months we were not allowed to use the University's health center, something that made me uneasy the entire trip. Luckily I did not need to use it.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Depended on the amount of extra travelling I did, regular expenses are manageable.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? A 16-25 railcard is a must, it will save you a lot of money on train fares.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Fluent
Language acquisition improvement?

Language was not an issue as I already speak English.
