Hamline University: York - University of York

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I enjoyed it. Hamline prepared me so well during my class with Susie Steinbach about how to travel in England and what to expect. I gained confidence and independence through my experiences at my internship, class and travels.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was just a very different program which I didn't really care for. But I am very pleased I did get to expereience a different educational system.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everything was fine at Hamline, but because the program is so new to the University of York, a lot of staff at the University didn't understand our program or could help us with questions. The International office and departments were great though.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Lived in a single room with a sink in Halifax college and then moved into James college at the start of term.

James college was fantastic and I really loved living there. My English housemates were lovely.

* Food:

It wasn't a buffet style and they restricted you alot on your choices, but it was so nice not to have to buy food since it was so expensive to eat out/buy groceries.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved traveling around the U.K. and Europe- please take as many opportunities as you can to travel, that is what made my study abroad experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt safe in York and if I had questions about health the university of York directed me to where I needed to go most of the time.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I tried to do 50 pounds a week but I bought a lot of gifts and traveled a lot. Just know your budget and map it out.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Train tickets can be expensive so book them in advance. Go around to all the clothes stores and see the differences in prices so you know where the best deals are.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Fluent
Language acquisition improvement?

They spoke English. It wasn't an issue.
