Hamline University: York - University of York

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes this experience was definitely worthwhile. I gained more understanding of the British culture as well as other worldly perspectives. I also gained confidence in my professional abilities while doing my internship in a field other than my major.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Fall 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The international office was very helpful when we encountered a problem about our meal program. They were also very organized about giving us opportunities to adapt and learn more about what to expect by way of an orientation and extra informative sessions.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

As I have already mentioned before, it would have been nicer to be on a floor with students who were more mature and more closer to my age. My first dorm was large and then I had to move into a smaller dorm, but it served its purpose. There was barely any heat though, but they don't heat their rooms as much as we do. There were shared bathrooms and kitchens, the first dorm had awful bathrooms and dirty kitchens but the second dorm had brand new bathrooms and kitchens.

I loved my lovcation and my housing was okay.

* Food:

Good and tasty food, but after awhile you seem to notice you have curry a couple times a week! It was nice to get a complete meal and not have to worry about paying for it our of your pocket or making it since I had the meal plan.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I made friends with everyone from Hamline going aswell as new ones from York and abroad.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Health service in the Uk is not free to US students if you are there for less than 6 months, so the health service on campus wouldn't take me. Safety was not a major concern, I was just smart about making good decisions.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? probably around 150 -200 dollars each week before uni started, when we were paying for every meal. I also traveled alot.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? LUNCH - not having lunch paid for in the meal plan can get expensive, so plan ahead, especially if you will be at an internship.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? This program is a great fit to meet your academic needs as well as preparing you for the professional world with an internship. It also has a schedule that is open to traveling -- so definitely buy a railcard and travel around and explore the Uk! But don't forget that York is one of the most amazing historic towns in England, so spend time getting to know it and its residents! :)

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Stained Glass in the Great Church

Course Department: History of Art
Instructor: Chloe Morgan
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The course was a seminar that met twice a week for 2 hours. We had various paid educational trips to view stained glass and medieval architecture in person. The instructor was young but very knowledgable of the topic. We had many readings each week as well as presentations to prepare for. The readings came from a daily reading list, in which we were to find from either online sources or three libraries, (one on campus and two off campus). We also had to write two papers.
Credit Transfer Issues: Still waiting for grade and credits.

Women in England

Course Department: History
Instructor: Susie Steinbach
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The course was very informative. We would have to read chapters from her book and primary sources that were posted online. A couple of times we had to prepare to lead discussion on a certain topic. Also, every class we had to turn in a writing assignment. Susie was very knowledgeable and helpful and made the class a lot of fun.
Credit Transfer Issues: No.
