Germany: Beneficial, Yet Not Mind-Blowing Past Review

By (German/English, Berea College) for

Heidelberg University: Heidelberg - American Junior Year Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes and no. I learned things about myself and about the world and it has solidified some of my thoughts about future plans, etc. But it wasn't what I was expecting and it wasn't the fantasy I had always imagined.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Workload was not enough, usually (though at the end I got busy!); there wasn't much homework. Teaching methods were usually uninvolved or tyrannical (in one case). Much more homework in the U.S. system; much more student-teacher interaction...way more personal.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

A lot of disorganization; good program size, though. Kind, well-intentioned program faculty. Not enough language practice. Expectations not well-met.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Nice distance from the center of town. Peaceful and quiet at night; most items provided, though I did have to buy things like dish soap, toilet paper,etc. Relationship to suitemates, good and bad.

* Food:

Food goes bad fast! Quality inferior to U.S. Not as many fruit/vegetable options. More expensive!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I was able to travel to Strasbourg, the Romantic Road, etc, with my program. There were some interesting field trips to Concentration Camps, cathedrals, etc.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

All very good; no vaccines necessary.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? At least 50 Euros on average, though I tried to do less when I could.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Bad exchange rate; don't eat out so much; buy your own food and be frugal in that. Traveling can get to be expensive!

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I don't know.
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Venture out of your comfort zone; others (including the program!) won't do this for you. Make your experience what you want it to be. .... people who like staying cushioned in other Americans; people who like Germany (Heidelberg is a beautiful city)
