Studying abroad at Heinrich Heine was the best idea I ever had! Past Review
By Lindsey J (German, Eastern Michigan University) for
Heinrich Heine University of Dusseldorf: Dusseldorf - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
I am a far more independent person now. I had to be an advocate for myself while I was over there and do things myself. My German proficiency skyrocketed. I made friends from all over the world that i still speak to and see. I learned so much about German culture, as well was European culture. It helped me create a more global way of thinking.
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
It was an excellent experience. The accommodations are really great. They are close to campus and are very nice. Usually one has at two other roommates, but own room. One has freedom to take whatever classes they choose. I enrolled in a few classes just for international students and few that were open to the entire university. The teachers were very nice and helpful. The library at Heinrich Heine is great. It has a large selection and is easy to navigate. The city of Duesseldorf is absolutely beautiful. There is always something to do from theater, sailing on the Rhein river, or visiting the many cafes and bars. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The administration is very nice but I had to do pretty much everything myself. I also had to visit multiple to get one task done. At Heinrich Heine there is a large department just for the support of international students called ISOS. This department was very helpful and helped me get settled. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The Housing was great. The area was beautiful and safe. The housing is near to a bus stop, the campus, and the botanical garden. |
* Food: |
The housing came with a small kitchen. It had a stove, sink, and refrigerator but no oven. On campus there were many places available to eat that were good. I cooked for myself mostly. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Heinrich Heine has a great cultural program. They take trips all over Europe was well as within Germany and Dusseldorf. I traveled to Berlin and saw the Berlin Wall. I went to Muenchen for a weekend and saw Schloss Neuschwanstein. I traveled to Amsterdam for a day. It is only two hours away from Duesseldorf. A Heinrich Heine ID allows for free travel within Nordrhein Westfalen. |

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |

|

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |

I used the language everyday even though the majority of people spoke English. All classes were taught in German. My roommates were also international students, both could not speak English, so German was our common language. |
