What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Studying abroad in Paris changed my life! I applied for a summer job and was accepted. While I was finishing my senior year of college my summer job asked me to return. Professional opportunities abound if you just apply yourself!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The work load is excellent for studying abroad. Classes are usually Monday through Thursday, and students get to take the opportunity on the 3 day weekends to explore Paris or to travel. At the beginning of the summer semester there is a week long trip to the south of France that is a part of the program's curriculum. It's a nice way to get to travel to places you maybe normally wouldn't have adventured to. Getting to know your fellow classmates was easier while traveling together as well. The grading is done on the French grading system, and I advise you familiarize yourself with it before studying abroad in Paris. The professors are excellent and in some classes there are go-and-see days each week. For art history this means going to the Musee d'Orsay once a week throughout the semester for lecture, or going to the architectural site that you studied in the previous class. I would highly recommend this program since it is small and offers a lot of perks that most study abroad programs do not offer. The week long trip to the south of France is not the only trip that students can take advantage of. There are also trip to the Loire Valley and Normandy, and all of these trips' cost is provided in your tuition.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program is excellent! I found the problems I had did not arise from the program, but from the situation with my host family. It was an older French couple and it took some time for us to get used to one another.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Housing was in an upscale neighborhood in Paris. Far from the center, but safe and still on the metro lines. I had a private full bathroom in my room, which was a major added bonus. Everything was provided really, except for laundry. Host family was pleasant but we really didn't get each other.

* Food:

The host mother was an old French lady who lived to cook. Each dinner was a four course meal with wine. The food was absolutely incredible.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

All of the trips were so memorable! The trip to south of France is at the same time as Carnivale, so you get to go and see the floats in the middle of Nice! Very cool.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I got sick once and my host mother called the doctor for me to set up an appointment close by. I took a few days off from class and followed doctor's orders. I let the program know I was sick but they didn't need to do anything about it seeing that I had made arrangements.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I had come to Paris to learn French and used all of the opportunities to practice. It's tiring, but totally worth it!

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Comments: As I had mentioned, the go-and-see days are really a perk. Once a week you are out of the classroom and getting to see a neighborhood of Paris that maybe you have yet to discover. I liked it because the class not only helped me get oriented in the city, but also encouraged me to visit areas of Paris that maybe I had yet to discover on my own.
Credit Transfer Issues: Hollins was my home institution, so it counted directly towards my major.

Comments: The semester I was there, this was definitely the most difficult program in the course. A heavy work load. Professor is not very warm or friendly. Learned a lot though and it increased my interest in art history.
