IES Abroad: Amsterdam - Social Sciences & Humanities

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was invaluable for me to meet people of many different cultures, and talk about differences, but mostly similarities. I hope to go back for grad school because I fell in love with Amsterdam.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Workload was significantly less, but I found that the group discussion were more interesting because the students were more diverse than at my home university.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Always available, friendly, and ready to answer questions

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Funenpark 6-59.

Big studio apartment in a quiet, pretty neighborhood. It came equipped with lots of dishware.

* Food:

I cooked my own food

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Field trips were okay, but I wish they had tried harder to integrate us with Dutch people or students from other programs. Our program was fairly isolated.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I always felt safe, no matter the time of day. Being on a bike might have helped.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About 70 euros
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Bedding is more expensive than I had anticipated
