IES Abroad: Amsterdam - Social Sciences & Humanities

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was absolutely worthwhile. I learned how to be more independent, I was able to take my first film class and I also took my first law class. I learned how to live on my own and cook for myself. This experience taught me not to be intimidated by the difficulty or material of a class.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I really enjoyed my academic experience at the University of Amsterdam. The classes were really interesting, really challenging and forced me to become a more independent student. Dutch professors really put the onus on the students to find their way in the class. Students need to take the initiative and the professors don't give outright guidance on how to perform well on tests and papers. However, this was a unique challenge as to truly explore my independence and I could always contact the professor if I had any specific questions. The Dutch grading system is based upon passing and isn't really based on rewarding the student. It is unlike the American system in that Dutch students just want to pass. However, that doesn't mean that getting an A isn't possible because I worked hard to receive an 8.0 or higher in all of my classes. It just requires more work to get that A, but that makes the high grade all the more rewarding. I found the classes offered to be very interesting and the material to be really intriguing. Several classes also had most of their grades come at the end rather than be spread out throughout the semester. The primary difference between the University of Amsterdam and the American school system is that it puts a lot more responsibility in the student's hands.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The on-site administration for the program was superb. All three members of the administration were in the same building (close to our apartment complex) and there was always one in the office. They set up really cool field trips for us and awesome opportunities around the city, such as seeing a Netherlands national team Eurocup qualifier game for 5 euro. The administration was very helpful in helping me explore different classes as well as accommodating me as my finals ran after the program ended. The program size was perfect and I loved how everyone was in the same building. My expectations were exceeded as the program was perfect. Our building was right outside the city center and was in a great location. The classes were great and the city of Amsterdam is just simply amazing.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Bought a lot of groceries and cooked for myself in order to save money. Groceries are really cheap in Amsterdam and eating out is expensive. You could get a lot of groceries for 20 euro.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Amazing social and cultural experience. The Dutch are super nice and the city is beautiful. Just a really lovely town with tons to do. Loved going to the Netherlands-Sweden Europcup qualifier game. The bars were awesome and the night life is just simply amazing.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Amsterdam is an extremely safe city. There is very little crime there and there really is nothing to fear late at night. If you go out with your bike, there isn't an issue walking back late at night.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

The Dutch in Amsterdam all spoke English, so I didn't really need to speak it. I tried using Dutch to order at restaurants several times. It was helpful to know Dutch when shopping at the grocery store.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If you could study IES Amsterdam, do it. It's an amazing experience. All you have to do is prepare to have an awesome time, take in the culture, travel and be prepared to do a little work as well. An open, social and outgoing person would be the best person for this program.

Comments: Awesome professor. Did a great job of exploring the region, which is his specialty. Each student was assigned a region, had to do a presentation on that region, write a paper on the region and then there was a final on the whole course. Final was simple and the paper was fun.
