IES Abroad: Barcelona - Study Abroad with IES Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes, it was an educational experience I could not have gotten at my home university.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks
The term and year this program took place: Spring 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes were educational, but just being there really taught me a lot.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program was not always very organized, but they were quick to respond to problems and the staff was helpful.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in an apartment with a widow and two American students from my program. We lived in the Sant Gervassi neighborhood which was very nice, safe and in a great location.

I had a wonderful host family and cannot complain about one thing.

* Food:

Wonderful, healthy food. I always had plenty to eat.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program did not do a very good job of advertising and hosting social or non-academic events.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt I was informed of the issues I needed to be and did not feel unsafe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I am not sure where the money went, but I feel that it was an expensive program.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? fourth-semester Spanish
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

The best way to improve language skills is to immerse oneself in TV, newspaper, anything that is in the host language.
