Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The teaching methods of some professors were slightly different than some American universities. Some of the students (mostly the ones who came for the beer), expected the coursework to be a cake walk, and were surprised when the professors held them to a high standard. There were few to no curves, but if you actually did the reading, I felt that all of the work was manageable. I was placed in the Advanced German class, and I know that it was harder for some of the people in the levels to keep up with the readings and keep up with the professors in class. However, the professors at the center did not grade based on the quality of German. They focused on the ideas, and making sure that the students understood the material. Overall, I feel like if someone wanted to do this program and be willing to put in effort (maybe more than others if they struggle with the language), then there is no reason why they couldn't do well in this program. On the rare occasions when the quality of language is graded, there are tutors that are there to proofread papers. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The program staff at IES Berlin exceeded my expectations. They are a very supportive group, and anytime I had questions, I felt that I could go to any one of them. I also feel like I can walk back into the building if I'm ever in Berlin and be welcomed with open arms. Can't say enough about how wonderful they are. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
My host family is a wonderful family, and they mostly left me to my own devices. I would eat dinner with them occasionally, and I went to some cultural events with them as well (gallery openings, plays, etc.) Overall, it was not what I necessarily expected, but they were fantastic. |
* Food: |
Berlin food is awesome. My own cooking skills, however, are not. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I loved the fields trips to the Eastern European capitals tour and Dresden. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Germany has Apothekes, so you don't have to go to the doctor just to get medicine. That part was helpful. Also, I felt pretty good about the overall safety of the city. I felt comfortable walking around alone at 4am. That being said, I don't know if I'd necessarily recommend that. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 50-70 Euros |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I'm pretty frugal in the states, but when I got to Berlin, I bought a lot of things, mostly because I didn't think that I would be able to come back to the city. I don't know if I'd necessarily recommend that mentality. |
