Glorified Tourism Past Review
By A student (Anthropology., University of the Pacific) - abroad from 07/27/2013 to 11/22/2013 with
IES Abroad: Buenos Aires - Society & Culture
What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I enjoyed my Latin American Politics class and my Cultural Studies class, but I found the overall program lacking when it came to cultural immersion. I felt like I was on a very long tourist vacation for much of my experience. This is largely due to the fact that all of the students are from the United States and are very young and inexperienced when it comes to travel and living abroad, so it makes sense that the program would go to such lengths to assist them, but it did not contribute to a deeper understanding of the culture.

Reasons For Studying Abroad
To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you. |
The Nearly Native or Trail BlazerCraving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.' |
