Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The teachers were not good. I don't feel like I learned any Spanish in the classroom. All the Spanish I learned was simply from living in Argentina.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program was well organized in regards to host family, transportation, and field trips. However, in regards to academics it was extremely disorganized. They had partnerships with Argentine universities but knew nothing about what the courses would require us to do as students. Most of the Argentine universities had expectations that were too high for the level of Spanish that most of the us were at. We probably shouldn't have even been allowed to participate.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My host family was great! I really felt like I was apart of the family and I loved hanging out with my host mom! Her older daughter and I even went shopping. IES did a great job of placing me in a wonderful home stay! I felt really safe and was only a short bus ride away from clubs and bars. I didn't have to buy anything aside from toiletries.

* Food:

Loved it, my host mom served lots of vegetables and the meat in Argentina is delicious! The food is so fresh and the pasta and pizza are to die for!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved traveling on the overnight buses and staying in hostels; you meet people from around the world! The night-life is incredible in BA and you will meet tons of different and interesting people every time you go out!! Also go to a Boca or RIver soccer game! It is a once in a lifetime experience. I was really lucky because the world cup was going on when I was in Iin BA -- SO INCREDIBLE!!! Also be sure to go to Boca, it has cute colorful houses and is where tango originated.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The main problem in Ba was pick-pocketing, but if you are careful this can be avoided. I never felt extremely unsafe. Just be aware of your surroundings and try to blend in. Don't carry a coach purse or an iphone, you will make yourself a target if you do this. I never got sick, so I can't comment on the healthcare. The only vaccine I made sure I had before I left was Hep A.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? No. Make sure you take field trips through IES; they are amazing and super cheap. If you can get City bank or TD before you leave, it will save you a lot of bank fees.

Language

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Espanol 250

Course Department: Spanish 250 (SPn 312K & 312L)
Instructor: Ana Mira
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: This course was horrible because of the teacher. She was unable to explain grammar effectively; I Iearned more from my Spanish grammar spark notes. She didn't seem to like teaching or the students. She also made us read a book that everyone hated and no one understood. The other Espanol 250 class did not have to read this book. Class time was extremely boring and a waste of time; I learned more Spanish from just living in BA. Also, she treated us like babies, we were not allowed to eat or use the restroom during class. She was NEVER able to explain things that we didn't understand.

Course Department: RTF 342
Instructor: Ariel Schettini
Instruction Language: English
Comments: He was a goofy guy and would frequently go off on tangents. However, he did tell us anything we wanted to know about Argentina/Buenos Aires from politics, to traveling, to night life. He was sweet and very interested in making sure we enjoyed our time in Buenos Aires. This class was not difficult and was a nice break from my Spanish classes. The only substantial amount of work was the midterm and final, which was all essays.

Reading and Writing workshop

Course Department: Spanish 250 (SPN 319S)
Instructor: Vale Tetti
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: This course was amazing. The profesora loved teaching and we had a lot of fun. We would spend about 30 minutes learning grammar and then the rest of the class we would share our writing assignments with one another. We also made a blog as a class about things such as parks, ferias, and night-life!

Comments: This course was awesome. It was extremely easy and the material was super interesting. We learned about Eva Peron, tango, Che, gauchos and much more. Our teacher also always asked about our travels and gave us advice on places to visit in Buenos Aires, and Argentina in general. He really wanted us to have a great experience in Argentina
