IES Abroad: Cape Town - University of Cape Town

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much about South African healthcare both from classes and seeing it in person. I got to see first hand how clinics and hospitals in South Africa differ from the USA. Along with seeing so many cool procedures and surgeries in the hospital.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

IES Cape Town was an amazing program both academically and location wise. There are so many educational and fun programs and activities to do in Cape Town and South Africa.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program tried their best to perform adminstrative duties but South Africa is very laid back and the companies my program dealt with did not always stay on schedule.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We stayed in flats with one other person living in the flat with you. They were extremly nice and very safe.

* Food:

The food in Cape Town was amazing. There was a wide variety of food choices and all of them were delicious.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We did our best to integrate ourselves in the local culture. We stayed in with a host family at one point and worked in clinics and hospitals in order to integrate ourselves with the culture and local healthcare system.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Good, I went to a private clinic when I was sick. I was helped right away and got the medicine I needed.

* Safety:

I never had any problems with safety but a couple of my friends got their stuff stolen. Just be smart and don't leave your stuff out in the open or go to sketchy places.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved IES they provided so many extra things to the program. Lots of fun trips and excursions. I also loved the set up of the program that it was part classes and part service learning in clinics and hospitals.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Cape Town was very inexpensive and it was very easy to live on a budget. The most expensive thing was transport ( Taxis and Ubers) since they added up over 7 weeks.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $90.00
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Take Ubers and not Taxis. Haggle prices in the markets.
