IES Abroad: Dublin - Study Abroad With IES Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Study abroad was definitely worthwhile. It made me realize that I am ready to interact with people outside of America and live on my own.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I felt that the workload was very fair. They gave enough work to where I was learning and reading about things I hadn't previously, but not so much that it overtook the trip and didn't leave time for outside activities.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The people in charge of my program were excellent. There was always someone available if I needed help or had a question. Everyone was really enthusiastic and a great resource.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Because I was living in a house I wish that we had been given more direction on what to do in terms of garbage and recycling.

* Food:

There was no food provided through the program, but the school is located near a lot of great affordable restaurants.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I participated in the Peace and Conflicts aspect of my program and it was the best decision! We got to take a trip to Belfast and speak with politicians from various parties and ask them questions. The entire Belfast experience was something that I'll never forget and that I learned so much from.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I was sick a few times while in Dublin and my program made it incredibly easy to see a doctor. I was provided with great healthcare over there and was able to see a doctor the day I requested and was reimbursed for any payments. I also found Dublin to be an incredibly safe city. As long as you were smart about your actions there were no problems. I never felt afraid to be anywhere in the city.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Dublin is incredibly expensive! Especially if you participate in nightlife things like drinks get to be pretty pricey. I think overall I spent about $2000 while I was there, which includes trips that I took.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? It's a great idea to keep yourself on a budget. It's very easy to spend lots of money without thinking, but if you can keep yourself to a limit it's really helpful.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
Language acquisition improvement?
