Four Months in Freiburg Past Review
By A student (Linguistics., Northwestern University) - abroad from 09/03/2014 to 12/19/2014 with
IES Abroad: Freiburg - Environmental Studies & Sustainability
I specifically chose this program because of its focus on language immersion and I got just that. All classes were taught in German and the professors presented material effectively and were willing to help if someone was confused. My German improved dramatically and I made local German friends. This experience was definitely worthwhile.

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |

Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
The program encouraged that we spoke German with each other, but I was disappointed that most students spoke English with each other. The program did not require us to only speak German with each other, but that might have been a helpful push and helped us all improve our German by being required to speak/use it constantly. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Intermediate |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Advanced |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | German 102-3 |

Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Spend a lot of time with your German roommates (if you have any) and only speak German with them. |
