A Beautiful Time in my Life Past Review

By (Brandeis University) - abroad from 01/13/2017 to 05/13/2017 with

IES Abroad: Galápagos Islands Direct Enrollment - GAIAS

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a new language, new friends, new knowledge, experiences that were once in a lifetime, new skills, hobbies, and cultural knowledge. That question is silly at this point. HELL YEAH it was worthwhile!

For females it is obviously more dangerous especially at night but overall there were no bad events to report within my group.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I wish there was an option for yes and no. Because if given another chance to go abroad I would choose somewhere else. But at the same time I would not give up this experience for anything. Nor would I trade it.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Food was very cheap and that was the main expense once you had all your essentials.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $75/week in the Galapagos; Quito was tough to calculate because of the souvenirs
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Eat at the $5 places. They are delicious and always worth the rice overload.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate

Reasons For Studying Abroad

The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
