IES Abroad: London - Study London

I gained confidence in myself and learned so much about myself and about another culture and country. I fell that it was incredibly worthwhile.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Most of the professors were great, but the classes were not difficult and didn't hold my interest for the length that they were.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everyone was incredibly nice and very helpful when things weren't going right. They helped me so much, especially emotionally, when my phone was stolen aggressively from me.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The room itself was great, I couldn't have asked for a better one. The maintenance was quick and helpful fixing things, but the staff at the front desk was a little rude.

* Food:

I liked almost everything I tried while I was abroad, and I'm a picky eater!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

While I went to the pub a few times and road the Tube like locals, by attending classes with only other study abroad students I don't feel like I integrated as much as I could have.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

IES made sure we knew what to do if we were sick or had an emergency. I thankfully didn't have to experience the UK's healthcare first hand.

* Safety:

London felt very safe to me, even though my phone was stolen kinda aggressively from me, I still felt safe walking around by myself.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

London is such an amazing city that has so much culture. There is so much to do, but it's also easy to travel to other European places.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

the exchange rate makes everything so much more expensive. It was pretty easy to stay on budget after the first week (when you buy all the start up stuff), but be aware it might still be more than your US budget due to the exchange rate.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 30
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Eating out is important to experience the culture, but don't do it every night. Makes meals for yourself and save the leftovers for lunch, you'll save a lot of money.
