IES Abroad: Milan - Study Abroad With IES Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I not only learned so much about myself as a student and person but also a lot about the Italian culture and workplace. It was a very humbling experience as an American student and I was so lucky to have gotten the chance to do this.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Just enough balance between academics, internship, and freedom.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

IES staff in Milan were very helpful during this fun and exciting semester. Just enough guidance to make you feel comfortable, but also enough space to let you have your study abroad adventure.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Satisfied and honestly surprised with the quality. It was really, really nice to live with an Italian roommate.

* Food:

Please, it's Italy.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program did a great job of providing students with optional cultural events in addition to encouraging travel.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

When I had a problem, one of the staff CA's took me to the local university heath center and the pharmacy tight after. So easy and took less than an hour.

* Safety:

Even though in a city, I felt very safe. You just have to be aware of where you are and where your personal belongings are at all times.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Money was as good/bad as you made it. It depends on how much you want to do/see/eat. I made it work on a student's budget and still was able to do so many great things. Really, it's up to you.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

We had a language intensive component and as difficult as it was at times, I am so happy we had it. It got me through Italy for those four months.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
