IES Abroad: Milan - Study Abroad With IES Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My study abroad experience in Milan through IES Abroad was fantastic. My goals before studying abroad were to make friends with Italian students and learn to speak the language. I had taken 4 semesters of Italian before studying abroad, however my Italian greatly improved through my Advanced Italian class. I felt comfortable getting around and speaking the language each day. Before studying abroad, I thought that I would stay in Boston and get a job after graduation, however now I'm looking into grad schools and research programs in Italy. The sky is the limit!

* Safety:

I felt extremely safe in Milan, much safer than in Boston.

IES provided me with a unique experience. Through the application process to the very end, I couldn't have asked for a better semester. I thoroughly enjoyed my classes (especially my cooking class) and the administration felt like family. Living in an apartment with an Italian student and other American students was a great experience. IES provided the students with nice and safe apartments.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Food is inexpensive in Italy, especially compared to at home. I spent no more than $50 per week on groceries and lunches.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $50
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Definitely try to budget. Plan out each weekend trip and set spending goals.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Intermediate Italian II
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Try to veer away from American Abroad students if you want to practice the language. Make friends with locals and don't be afraid to speak!

* What could be improved?
  • More cultural immersion with surrounding universities
  • More time at beginning to adjust to time change
  • longer hours in library
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? My biggest regret is not having studied abroad for a year. A semester did not feel long enough. I also wish I had met more Italian students and stayed away from American abroad students. I was always nervous to speak the language, however that fear held me back from (potentially) becoming fluent!!!
