IES Abroad: Milan - Study Abroad With IES Abroad
Living in Milan made me see the differences between Italy as a whole but it has also allowed me to be a more independent person. In the future I would love to move back to this vibrant city.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The workload seemed much higher than other programs, however, I learned so much in these classes and they were so much fun and interesting that I did not mind all the work. The teaching was done by Italian professors so it was a little different than I was used to, but you quickly adapt to their methods. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
All the faculty was extremely friendly and available for the students whenever one needed them. They were always eager to help with any problems one had. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
We were only required to buy bedding and towels to settle in, other than that the furniture was all in great condition and the kitchen was fully stocked. The neighborhood was great, and the apartment was huge. |
* Food: |
It's italian food! You can't go wrong with anything you try. There are many places to eat in Milan and most are delicious, just go out and explore the town, you will never be bored. One of the favorite spots to go for 'aperitivo' was Yguana. Aperitivo is like a happy hour in Milan where people usually meet after work or class, pay for their drink and are then able to take part of the buffet at the bar. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
The nightlife in Milan is huge, you will never be bored. Not only is the nightlife great but the trips organized by IES were some of my most memorable trips. We had three planned by them and I would do them all over again. They included almost everything with accommodations for sleeping, food, and travel as well as great guided tours of the places where we visited. We even had a ski trip organized by them, the slopes were great and the food at the hotel was an amazing all you can eat buffet of delicious italian food. We were in heaven for 3 days. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
No vaccines were needed and at the beginning during orientation IES did a great job of informing all the students on all emergency numbers and protocols for what to do in any emergency situations. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |
|
Language acquisition improvement? |
For the first month it was an intensive immersion program, where we had italian for 3 hours every day as well as some events in the evenings to introduce us to the culture of the city. It was wonderful and a very enriching experience. After the first month, when the rest of classes started we only had class three times a week for an 1 1/2. It was also easy to practice italian with my italian roommate as well as using it everyday out in the streets as many people in Milan don't know english. |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | This program is wonderful way to fully immerse yourself in the Italian culture and lifestyle since it is a less toursty city then Rome and Florence. Do not be afraid to make friends with Italian students and learn from them. |
