IES Abroad: Nagoya Direct Enrollment Summer – Language & Culture

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I feel I gained a deeper understanding of the people and culture that exists in Japan. There only so much you get from classes at Universities in your home country and nothing is quite like the real thing. Also, some the teachers at Nanzan were amazing. For me it was the Japanese Politics teacher who I would have hour long talks with after the class, because of how interesting the material is. So all of this made the program worthwhile to me.

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had know how hot it was going to be in Japan. I'm from Florida so it gets pretty hot here too, but thinking that Japan would be cooler was a mistake. I brought 2 pairs of jeans that I never wore, and a pair of slacks that would only be wore on laundry day. I wish could have saved that space in my luggage for other stuff.

The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
