Overall Experience
Nantes is the perfect city if you want to improve your french skills. Most people don't speak English so you are forced to speak in french. It's big enough so there's always something to do but small enough so that it's not overwhelming. IES does a great job of immersing you in the culture and the program is very organized and t... - University of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh View Entire Review
I gained so much independence and self confidence, it was absolutely worthwhile. - Whitman College View Entire Review
When I first started planning my semester in France, I was convinced that I wanted to study abroad in Paris because, well-- it's Paris! Looking back on my experience now, I could not be happier that I chose Nantes instead. I truly believe that I gained so much more from living in a smaller city where English is not commonly spok... - University of California - Irvine View Entire Review
My language skills improved ten-fold. I feel completely comfortable conversing with people in French. I made amazing friends and met some great academic mentors. Nantes feels lil a home away from home. - Northwestern University View Entire Review
I gained a great deal of knowledge about France and their culture, while also learning a lot about myself. I gained so much more confidence after living abroad. - Hope College View Entire Review

Although I was already at an advanced level of French, this experience helped to improve my speaking, listening comprehension, writing and reading dramatically. Also, I gained a deeper understanding of the French people and culture. Furthermore, not only did I get to know the local culture, but through my program I met people fr... - The University of Texas at Austin View Entire Review
I definitely loved studying abroad, especially here in Nantes. No one speaks English like in Paris and my host family was great. The university was fun and I made good French friends. The only thing I would change is studying abroad through a program like IES, I realize now that I would have learned way more french and had a bet... - University of the Pacific View Entire Review

I gained an understanding of culture, people, language and myself that one can only gain by living it. It was completely worthwhile and something I wouldn't trade for the world. - Hope College View Entire Review

It was absolutely worthwhile. I was so sad to leave. I made great friends, ate great food and learned a lot--not just in class, but from a new daily pattern that I got used to. - Tufts University View Entire Review
Past Review Life In Nantes
Without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life. - Austin College View Entire Review
Yes, it was. I learned more about myself than I thought I would, and it's made me realize that my goals to pursue French language and literature in college and for my career aspirations are plausible and doable. I had a fair amount of friend drama and host family problems that I went through, but that had just as much to do with... - Saint Anselm College View Entire Review
Completely and unequivocally! - Southern Methodist University View Entire Review
Nantes is a beautiful city and I think a great place to study abroad if your goal is to improve your language skills. While people do speak English to you on occasion, I found it to be true far less in Nantes than in other areas of France. Living in a host family is a key part to this program. The opportunity to take classes at ... - Grinnell College View Entire Review
My French skills definitely improved when I was abroad. Taking all of my classes in French, hearing people speak French in the streets, and living with a host family all helped me practice my French, especially as it is used in daily life. I learned to be more independent by having to find my way around a new city. I also learne... - University of Rochester View Entire Review
I can now truthfully say I speak French. I have a much deeper understanding of French culture. My worldview has widened. I am more confident abroad, and in new situations in general. I'm more comfortable with not knowing something and asking others to explain it. That's only the tip of the iceberg: it was totally worthwhile. - University of Minnesota - Twin Cities View Entire Review
I learned so much about French culture by being in a less touristy city like Nantes. This program is beyond worthwhile. I was so impressed by how much my French improved through this cultural immersion. - Northwestern University View Entire Review
I gained a confidence in my French speaking ability, and the drive to make that last step from advanced speaking to fluency. I also gained a group of French friends and family who believe in me and would support me if I choose to return. - Southern Methodist University View Entire Review
There is so much that I have gained and learned that there is not the time or room to explain it all. It was absolutely worthwhile. - The University of Texas at Austin View Entire Review
I gained a better sense of self, and surprisingly a greater appreciation for the States. In learning about another culture, you find out what you like and dislike about your own. Also, it opened my mind to a lot of new ideas. You also get to meet people that you would never have the opportunity to meet otherwise. - Indiana University - Bloomington View Entire Review

This was one of the most worthwhile experiences of my life. I will never forget my time abroad, my host family, the friends I made and who I've kept in touch with. I learned to express myself in another language about things I'm passionate about (specifically women's issues) which was a very cool experience for me. - DePauw University View Entire Review
I have gained confidence in myself and the desire to travel more in the future. It was very worthwile. - University of the Pacific View Entire Review

The experience was worthwhile, but what was surprising to me at the beginning of the program was that I learned more about myself and about personal things unrelated to French and academics than I did about other things. I learned about the type of people I should associate with, and I learned very much about my personal strateg... - Saint Anselm College View Entire Review
I learned a lot about myself and what makes me happy; i also learned to adapt quickly and well and not be intimidated by daunting tasks like moving to a new city where you don't know a soul! - Grinnell College View Entire Review

About

Our French Language Immersion & Area Studies Program has two important goals: to improve your written and verbal proficiency in French through language and area studies courses and to introduce you to contemporary France and its role in the European Union. A beautiful city on the Loire River, Nantes is the perfect place to perfect your French. For more than 50 years, this program has been offering students the opportunity to fully integrate into French society and function completely in French, thanks to the program’s focus on full immersion and the fact that there are few Anglophones in Nantes.

This program has a close relationship with the Université de Nantes, so you will have many opportunities to enroll in local university courses. IES Abroad courses are taught in French by native French faculty, many of whom are professors at the Université de Nantes. You also have access to the university libraries, computer labs, cafeterias, and sports facilities, and you are welcome to join student clubs and other social and sports organizations.
