IES Paris- There is Life Outside Your Program-Appointed Apartment Past Review

By (BA in Art History, The University of Texas at Austin) for

IES Abroad: Paris - French Studies

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. I loved it, and I want to go back. I only wish my program had had other international students instead of just Americans.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Grading is from 1-10; as long as you get a 7 or above you're okay and no one gets a 19-20. All of my classes were small and discussion-based, with the exception of one lecture course.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Felt a little scattered- a friend of mine had serious issues with her apartment and they were unfriendly and slow to respond.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment was fine- like a dorm but in a good location and safe. I wish I had lived with French people instead of an American, but I am still happy I chose apartments over the homestay- they sounded awful.

* Food:

It is difficult but not unmanageable to be a vegetarian in France. I made a lot of soups and a lot of pasta- and I ate a lot of crepes while out and about.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved Paris. The city has so much to offer if you break away from your American friends and explore. Don't be afraid to walk around- maybe not at night by yourself. Pretty much anything you're interested in, you can find in Paris.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The healthcare system was well addressed during orientation. The only times I didn't feel safe were walking around certain neighborhoods at night (Oberkampf, Bastille) with one other girl- my friend and I were harassed walking to the bar and she was physically attacked.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Budget well- food is expensive.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? FR 320e/ advanced French 1
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

All of the classes are taught in French. The staff will speak in French to you first, and only repeat in English if you look lost. I went out a lot, hung out in coffee shops and parks and bars, and spoke to people. I saw movies in French, and I read the newspapers.
