My time in Paris was an amazing, enriching, and unforgettable experience! Past Review

IES Abroad: Paris - French Studies
YES. I am now a huge study abroad advocate. I think that everyone should live in a different culture, because you learn a lot about yourself, about your relationships, about your goals, and about other people. I am looking for a way to move back to Europe after college, and would love to live there permanently. Living in Paris was a unique opportunity and my host family made the experience as amazing as it was.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The workload at IES is relatively low, and the grading system is based on the French scale of 1-20 (but curved--actual French university grades are typically very low and that was not the case at IES, at least for me.) I enjoyed most of my classes, and was impressed with the caliber of professors. The teaching methods were really very similar to my US French courses, in most cases. I did not feel particularly challenged by my IES courses. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The program's strengths were its location in the 14th arrondissement of Paris and the staff. The staff members were extremely helpful and made themselves available whenever the students needed them. My expectations were met by their efforts--I would have liked more enforcement of the "French only" rule, which was not enforced hardly at all, but that was my only complaint with the staff. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Living with a host family was an amazing decision. I lived in a very safe neighborhood, even though it was about 45 minutes away from class and nightlife, via metro. I felt very safe walking home from my metro station, even very late at night. I did not need to buy any items to settle in, and my family was extremely accommodating. I would say that I was treated between a family member and as a guest. My host family was the reason my French improved, and I absolutely loved the experience of living with them. |
* Food: |
My host mom's cooking was great. I packed a lot of my lunches for during the day, but food can be found on some of the great little places on Rue Daguerre for about 4 euros. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
We went on two field trips that were very well organized, one to Chantilly and one to Fontainebleau/Vaux-le-Vicomte, two chateaux in the Paris region. I thoroughly enjoyed both. I think it would have been better if the program did more cultural outings. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I think the safety advice I have is just to be aware and not to travel places alone if you can avoid it. I went to the doctor once, and my program was incredible helpful in showing me where the office was, getting me in to see him, and explaining the reimbursement procedures. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | No |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Intermediate |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | Upper division French history course |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |
|
Language acquisition improvement? |
I used French every day in interactions with Parisians, but most students in my program (even though they weren't supposed to), spoke English. In order to practice French, I recommend living with a host family, where you would be required to speak French. |

Francophone Paris |
Course Department: | SO 320 |
Instructor: | Sophie Fesdjian |
Instruction Language: | French |
Comments: | I really enjoyed this course. The professor encouraged the class to express our opinions nearly every day, and she brought her own insights to the course material, making it more relatable and more interesting. I participated as much as I would have at my home institution, and was very impressed with what I learned about modern French society. We went on one field trip, and it was a good experience |

Course Department: | FR 426L |
Instructor: | Jouhaud |
Instruction Language: | French |
Comments: | This was a fun course, and very instructive. There was a lot of grammar and a lot of homework, translating texts from English in to French. I feel like I learned a lot about sentence structure in French and how writers have to make changes when translating texts. We watched videos as well in order to increase our understanding. |

Comments: | This was my outside course at the Sorbonne. I did not appreciate the structure of the course, and I don't feel that I learned a lot from class meetings. I was required to write a 10-page paper in order to receive my grade for the course, and I feel that I learned a lot from having to write such a long essay. |

19th Century Literature |
Course Department: | LIT 336 |
Instructor: | Sophie Robert |
Instruction Language: | French |
Comments: | This was a difficult course. Prof. Robert had very high and specific expectations, and did not always communicate them very well. The assignments were very hard, and I rarely felt prepared to complete them. I do think that I learned a lot about reading French literature and understanding it, so overall I would consider the course to be a positive experience. |
