IES Abroad: Salamanca - Advanced Spanish Immersion

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
If you're looking for a university town full of energy, excitement, and new experiences, Salamanca is the city for you! It is big enough and diverse enough for self-discovery and gaining independence, but still gives you the small home town feeling when you cross paths with familiar faces on a daily basis. You can also walk everywhere which saves on transportation.
Salmantinos are used to foreigners and short-lived friendships because students come from a semester to a year to study, but are willing to show you the best of their city and create lifelong bonds if you are just as open and understanding. One of my favorite memories with the locals and other university students is the Noche vieja universitaria (University New Year's Eve) where they celebrate together just before everyone heads home for the holidays. Our group comprised of Spanish, French, Italian and American students - we each cooked a dish from our home country and danced bachata in their apartment. We laughed at our misunderstandings and learned a few words in each other's languages.
Salamanca gives you the opportunity, not only to improve and perfect your spanish, but also immerse yourself in worldly issues. Learning about other cultures does wonders when it comes to appreciation, tolerance and understanding and that is exactly what you'll get in Salamanca. I'd go back a thousand times over!

The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
