IES Abroad: Salamanca - Advanced Spanish Immersion

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I was honestly surprised with how much I learned abroad. I grew as a student both inside and outside the classroom. I have a great appreciation for the world around me and am so grateful for the opportunities I have had.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The professors at the University of Salamanca are phenomenal. They go out of their way to help you in any way that they can and do everything they can to help you succeed. They understand that you are there to take classes, but also to travel and experience their culture. The workload is very manageable and appropriate and allows you to learn and grow as a student while providing time to appreciate the culture, travel, and have time for experiences outside the classroom.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everything was truly perfect. My host family was extremely welcoming and treated me like a member of the family. The program size was about 20 kids but we had the opportunity to meet and integrate with other programs from all over the world, which was really cool. The IES staff was always available (one staff member was always "on call") should we need them for any reason. The support services were above and beyond and the program exceeded my expectations.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

IES does a great job of providing phenomenal host families. My family was so kind and welcoming and did a wonderful job of respecting my culture while allowing me to appreciate and learn their culture. Sheets, towels, and meals were provided. I felt right at home and was treated as a member of the family. All homes through IES are in safe neighborhoods, have fire alarms, internet access, and other accommodations that help make the living environment as comfortable as possible.

* Food:

My host family was extremely accommodating when it came to dietary restrictions and preferences. My mother made me feel comfortable telling her what I did and did not like and always cooked things she knew I was comfortable eating. If I didn't like a meal she was more than happy to prepare something else and made me feel comfortable being honest about my preferences and what I did and did not like.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

IES provided very unique opportunities such as weekend trips to Santander and Portugal. They also provided us with resources to book excursions through the University and were more than willing to help with the planning of personal trips. They also had fun events in Salamanca that we could attend, such as dance classes, Flamenco performances, group dinners, ice cream socials, and plays.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt extremely self and comfortable in Salamanca. I actually had to go to the doctor for pink eye and was extremely impressed with the level of care provided. The doctors were so helpful and IES always ensures that one of the staff members is with you (if you want) to help with translation and make you feel as comfortable as possible.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced language with my host family, in class, and with friends that I met in Spain. I also used a program through the University to meet local students to help them practice English and in return they helped me practice my Spanish. Almost everyone speaks in Spanish. There are some people who are able to speak English but mostly my communication was all in Spanish.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
