Vienna: A Semester of Adventures! Past Review
By A student (German, Language and Linguistics, Brandeis University) - abroad from 01/11/2013 to 05/17/2013 with
IES Abroad: Vienna - Study Abroad With IES Abroad
I gained a broader aspect of the world. It was certainly worthwhile, as I had the opportunity to travel within Austria as well as to bordering countries, and learn about the various cultures. I also made a lot of new friends!

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I absolutely loved my classes, and there were many resources available. I only give it 3 1/2 stars for two reasons: 1. The intensity of the classes was much less than I was used to, and 2. I wish there had been a larger variety of courses offered in German. I must say that even though the intensity of classes was less, I still feel like I learned a great amount during the semester. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The administration was deeply engaged in helping the students, and were always there if we needed something. I got to know them and I felt like they really cared to get to know each student individually, as well. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
My apartment was very modern, and there was a balcony, which was nice. However, I was disappointed that while I was paying the same amount as everyone for housing, I did not have the same amount of space as everyone else. We did not have a living room and I shared a very small room with someone else from the program. Our apartment was also far away from the U-Bahn (underground tram, which was most convenient), but we could take a street tram to get most places. |
* Food: |
We bought and cooked our own food, which was exciting, as it felt very independent. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
While it was exciting to attend theater and musical performances, being at an institution with all Americans did not allow for much integration within the local culture. I did live with an Austrian RA, which was nice, as then I had the opportunity to speak German with her. We also had the opportunity to have Austrian "language buddies," to practice speaking and learn more about the culture. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I didn't have any specific issues during the program, but IES made sure we had healthcare, and told us which doctors to go to. They were always there if we had any additional questions. Also, when I did hear of students going to get help, it cost very little compared to in the US. |
* Safety: |
Vienna is known for being extremely safe, and I did feel safe the whole time I was there! |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
I sometimes felt as if I was spending too much. It was hard for me to figure out what was normal, as I wasn't used to buying groceries in addition to other expenses in the US. Also, having to constantly convert the euro to dollar was difficult at times. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $100 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I would advise to create a budget for yourself, so that you know you can only spend a certain amount each week. Also, do not eat out too often, as it adds up! |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
I wish there had been more opportunities to speak German, or at least more courses offered in German. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Advanced |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Advanced |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | 105A |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | If you have the chance to speak to someone who speaks German, just speak it! Do not give in to speaking English even if it is the easy way out. |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | A majority of the students had never taken German before. I thought it would be more oriented toward people studying German. However, they were pretty good at placing people in the correct level of German, and I certainly improved during the semester! I also didn't realize how central Austria is in Europe. It was really amazing to have the opportunity to travel so much, and I went on many great adventures with friends. |
Reasons For Studying Abroad
To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you. |
The Academic or LinguistYou went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you. You had a great time abroad, but never lost sight of your studies and (if applicable) were diligent with your foreign language study. Good for you! |
Individual Course Reviews
Course Name/Rating: |
The Culture of Immigration |
Course Department: | Sociology |
Instructor: | Katharina Klettermayer |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | This class enhanced my experience abroad greatly. Not only did I learn so much about immigration within Austria and the importance of tolerance of all people, we also had amazing field trips that allowed us to take our knowledge and experience what we had learned first-hand. This included a trip to an intercultural Kindergarten, an African Church, and "Dialogue in the Dark," an exhibit carried out in complete darkness to see what it is like to be blind. We were assessed by small journal entries throughout, a final paper, and two exams (mid-term and final). The teacher was extremely knowledgeable and loved what she taught, which made us love it as well. |
Credit Transfer Issues: | I have not yet tried to transfer credit, but I don't believe it will be an issue at Brandeis, as they already said they would accept all the courses I took. |
