Great wildlife and education, would have been better if I could've had a car. June 28, 2025
By A student (Biology, Middlebury College) - abroad from 02/11/2025 to 06/20/2025 with
IFSA: Brisbane - University of Queensland
It was a worthwhile experience and I gained insights into how to navigate friendships with knew people who did not fully understand me. I also took some amazing classes and saw some amazing wildlife.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 2 weeks - 1 month |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The Australian grading system took some getting used to, but the classes themselves were interesting and engaging. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Our IFSA coordinators changed three times during the program, which was a little confusing and led to some events being cancelled at the last minute. Other than that, administration was helpful and friendly. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I stayed at a college on campus, International House. This arrangement was very convenient as it was right on campus, so it was a 5-10 minute walk as opposed to a 20 min. bus ride (which were the circumstances of the alternative housing). Though it was convenient to live here, it was difficult due to administrative changes that came with the new president. Additionally, we were promised a gym from the start of the semester, but it was never installed, which was quite frustrating. |
* Food: |
At international house, they did the best to provide for everyone with the budget they were given. Overall, the food was fine and suitable to my needs. However, it was not as suitable to vegans or vegetarians, who often found themselves missing a vegetatian protein option. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
International House is focused on housing for international students, so there are not as many local australians. This made it more difficult to integrate with local culture. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I did not have an experience with healthcare personally, but it generally seemed to be issued in a convenient and friendly way. |
* Safety: |
I felt safe in Brisbane, even walking around the city at night. It is a calmer city than most, but even in the active night life spots like Fortitude Valley, places were well lit and officers were around if needed. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
While I enjoyed my time in Brisbane, if I knew what I know now, I likely would have chosen a city that is slightly more accessible to natural areas, such as Sydney, whose public transportation is far more widespread. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $50 |

The Avid AdventurerThe wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal. |

Comments: | This course was fascinating and relevant to the genetics/genomics field. This course was especially useful as my home institution is lacking in human and current research related genetics courses, so this was an excellent course to supplement my interest in genetics. |
