IFSA: Buenos Aires - Argentine Universities Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely. I learned how to exercise independence, visited amazing sights, practiced intensively my Spanish, and ate the best beef in the world!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

great experience being fully immersed in Argentine universities, very challenging but rewarding, nicely developed tutoring system and academic classes at office headquarters

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

My program was prepared for everything! They responded quickly and thoroughly to every question and concern. They provided exciting excursions and other extra curricular opportunities for students. The program's enrollment was very large so it felt as it there was limited interactions with other students, which was a good thing and a bad thing at times. It would have been nice to have more program related events sometimes. At the same time, the program strongly encouraged interactions with locals so limited time with other students benefited my language improvement.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my host family and my apartment's location! They were so friendly and helpful and I was close to basically everything important in Buenos Aires!

* Food:

The program was very accommodating and provided great meals during program oriented events. My host family prepared the best meals! Buenos Aires is friendly to those who have champagne tastes with boxed wine budgets. Everything tastes great- even the McDonalds. Things might be difficult for vegetarians. Also there is a severe absence of spicy food in Argentina.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Program constantly provided arrangements for cultural events and arranged internship and volunteer opportunities. For the most part, I felt that students pursued social and non-academic aspects on their own volition, independent from the program.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Buenos Aires is a big city and obviously crime exists. For the most part, I felt safe but I definitely had to be extra cautious and attentive.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I came to Argentina a little rusty in my Spanish and it improved instantly. I found limited opportunities to speak English so I felt forced into practicing my Spanish at all times, which ultimately really helped as intimidating as it was at times.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would recommend this program to those who want to be fairly independent. The program does not coddle students by any means. Academically, it was challenging and the stresses of the city can be overwhelming at times. I would recommend traveling as much as possible around Argentina to get a better feel of Latin America too.
