What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Studying abroad at the University of Melbourne was completely worthwhile. I had the most unforgettable experience. The classes I took while abroad were all very educational and taught by wonderful professors. I just love the city of Melbourne and can't wait to get back there!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Overall the professors are great and have office hours so it is easy to talk to them. For one of my sociology classes, Minds and Madness we took a field trip to a local art museum that looked at how a person's mental emotions are shown by pen and paper or oil and canvas. The experience was an unforgettable one and really emphasized what we were learning about in class. The organic labs really helped to solidify the concepts we were lectured on in class and the tutorials were always very helpful because it was a smaller group of students and individual questions could be answered. Overall, the professors are top notch and the peers in the classes were wonderful.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in University College. I had a roommate who was also studying abroad for the semester who was from Texas. It was so fun, I love the college. We had communal dinners once a week called "High Table". We all wore black robes to dinner, that were provided by the college. Once during your stay at the college you were invited to sit at the high table with the Head Mistress, honored faculty members and other College administrators. The College has a small library from which you can borrow text books so you do not have to buy them while abroad unless it is a teaching packet. Living with all of the other students was a very good way to get to know the culture and meet fun and different people. The colleges also have intramural sports and activities you can participate in. Oh, each college also puts on fun events to get to know all their new residents and they have a winter ball (so bring a nice outfit to wear to the ball if you stay here) I wasn't expecting to have to dress up but do bring at least one dress or nice suit.

The housing had a very Ivy League feel. It is right across the street from Princes Park which is a very fun and safe park to walk around and play the intramural sports in. There is a tram stop just up and around the corner from the building so it is very easy to get anywhere in the city. The public transportation is very safe, if I haven't mentioned that yet. I felt very safe living in University College and it is just across the street from the University of Melbourne. I walked to class everyday and love it!

* Food:

The food was very good. There is a "High Table" once a week where the food is served to everyone. Otherwise it is served out of the cafeteria by the kitchen staff. There were always a few options to choose from and there was always dessert, yum!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I saw the Rugby sevens semi finals of the Common Wealth Games. I took a week to travel around on a bus tour to New Zealand with a bunch of other tourists and a few students from America. I walked and took the tram all over the city. I took the bus out to Werribee Mansion. My roommate and I stayed with a family on a farm in rural Australia as part of the Butler program. We explored the local restaurants and pubs and shopping- we just did everything we could to get out and about and experience Australia. I had the best time! I would say studying abroad is a MUST! It is such an important life experience and being able to stay for an extended period of time and study with foreign students is a truly unforgettable experience!
