International Studies Institute / ISI Florence

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worth while. I am the first person in my family to travel abroad for school so I can say that I learned more about myself, but also how to be more independent.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I would do this program again, but I would take different courses than the ones I chose. Also maybe take one less class to ensure I get the most of my experience.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $125
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Budget out your money by week. Since this program does not have a food program, expect to spend some where around the same amount as your meal plan from the University of Hartford. Also, since you are abroad and the age limits are different, also make a "going out" budget to ensure you don't over spend at bars and clubs. For some this is easy, while others lose track in all the fun.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I did not take this language in college prior to departure
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? During the semester prior, use duolingo

* What could be improved?
  • Living situation, living in an apartment of 7 was less than ideal
  • Food situation, it would be nice if I didn't have to cook every meal or go out and spend money if I didn't want to cook
  • Class schedule, 9-6 monday through friday is alot especially when there is no scheduled lunch break. ESPECIALLY when Italy's main meal break is lunch.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? That towel cost an arm and a leg and they will not be provided.
