This program changed my life in so many ways. Tanzania is a mix of more than 120 ethnic groups, the majority of whom speak Bantu languages, including Kiswahili, the official language. Major religions include Christianity, Islam, Hinduism along with tribal traditions. Tanzania has much to offer - amazing wildlife parks, unique marine ecosystems, spice islands, tropical beaches, the highest mountain in Africa and a rich cultural heritage.
This program’s curriculum combines a Swahili Language & Culture course with a wide selection of elective courses (taught in English) that focus on public health, international development and economics, diplomacy, conflict resolution, security, urban planning and education, and international relations, along with substantial opportunities for volunteer service in the community. Students also take the “Introduction to COSA” (Community Organizing and Social Activism) and “COSA in Arusha”. IPSL students are integrated with African students and are taught by African professors, making for a rich cultural immersion experience. Service-learning placements are organized at various NGOs, humanitarian organizations, schools, museums, laboratories and clinics.
Volunteer opportunities may include:
· Education
· Environment
· Humanitarian Aid
· International Relations
· Leisure/Recreation
· Medicine/Health
· Social Services
· Orphanages
Students live with a Tanzanian family and most meals are included. Time spent in the city studying, volunteering and living with a Tanzanian family is combined with opportunities to explore the National Parks as well as the urban environment of Arusha and surrounding northern Tanzanian villages.
Excursions may include:
· Arusha city tour
· Tarangire National Park
· A 3-night trip to Nairobi, Kenya (semester only) to include Nairobi National Museum, Elephant orphanage and Giraffe center
Potential independent excursions:
· Dar es Salaam
· Zanzibar (the Spice Islands)
· Mt. Meru
· Mt. Kilimanjaro
