About

Oi!

The Marvelous City lives up to its name — and then some.

Mountains behind you. The Atlantic in front. Samba drifting from somewhere down the street. Rio de Janeiro is one of those cities that hits you the moment you arrive and doesn't let go. The Cariocas — as Rio's residents call themselves — have a word for their approach to life: jeito. A kind of warmth, resourcefulness, and joy that you feel everywhere from Ipanema Beach to the favela hilltops.

With IPSL, you don't visit Rio — you live it. Learn Brazilian Portuguese in a school steps from the ocean. Volunteer with kids and teenagers in communities that will genuinely benefit from your presence. And give yourself time to understand a city that is far more complex, layered, and alive than any postcard suggests.

Learn Portuguese where it sounds best. IPSL's partner school sits minutes from Ipanema Beach — Rio's most iconic neighborhood. Classes are small, instructors are native speakers, and they teach you how Brazilians actually talk, not just how textbooks say they do. You'll practice ordering food, navigating the metro, and holding a real conversation from your first week.

Volunteer work that genuinely matters. Rio is a city of extraordinary contrasts. The same streets that draw millions of tourists are home to communities with deep inequities in education and opportunity. IPSL connects you with youth empowerment organizations doing real work — after-school tutoring, sports and leisure programs, confidence-building activities for underserved kids and teens. Your improving Portuguese becomes a bridge. The kids notice when you come back the next day.

You'll leave with functional Brazilian Portuguese, genuine volunteer experience, deep cultural fluency, and a story you'll still be telling years from now.
