About

"Übung macht den Meister"*

German has a reputation. Complex grammar, long compound words, a sound that intimidates beginners. Ignore all of it. German is one of the most logical, precise, and ultimately satisfying languages to learn — and there is no better place to learn it than inside a country that has shaped modern Europe more than any other.

IPSL's Germany program places you in some of the continent's most compelling cities, at award-winning accredited language schools, with a program designed around your schedule, your level, and your goals. Choose one city and go deep, or move between several and experience how different Germany can be from one region to the next.

Choose your city.

Berlin doesn't do anything quietly. Germany's capital is one of the great cities of the 21st century — a place still visibly rebuilding its identity after a century of extraordinary history, and doing so with more creative energy than almost anywhere in Europe. The Wall came down in 1989 and the city has been reinventing itself ever since: underground clubs in former power stations, world-class contemporary art in neighborhoods that were rubble within living memory, and a food scene that's finally getting the international attention it deserves. Berlin rewards curiosity. Bring plenty of it.

Düsseldorf is the Germany that surprises people. Elegant, walkable, and situated on the Rhine in Germany's most densely populated region, it's a city of fashion, contemporary art, and some of the most serious Altbier in the country. Consistently ranked among the most livable cities in Europe, it has none of Berlin's noise and all of its own particular charm.

Frankfurt is two cities in one. Look up and you see the Mainhattan skyline — the most dramatic in continental Europe, home to the European Central Bank and Germany's financial heartbeat. Look around and you're in a medieval Altstadt of half-timbered houses, apple wine taverns, and one of the world's great museum waterfronts. The contrast is genuinely startling, and genuinely worth your time.

Hamburg is a port city in the truest sense — restless, outward-looking, and defined by water. More bridges than Venice and Amsterdam combined. One of Europe's busiest harbors. A warehouse district that turned into a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Germany's best neighborhoods. Hamburg also gave the world the Beatles, who spent years here playing clubs in the Reeperbahn before anyone outside the city knew their names. It has that kind of energy still.

Munich is the Germany of the imagination — grand baroque architecture, beer gardens under chestnut trees, the Alps visible on clear days from the city center. But Munich is also a serious place: home to BMW and some of the world's leading research universities, with a museum landscape that would anchor any European capital. It earns the clichés and then exceeds them.

How the program works. With IPSL's guidance, you'll design the experience that fits you: private or small-group classes, the number of hours per week, where you live (homestay or apartment), and how long you stay — programs run from a few weeks to a full year. Weekly cultural activities and excursions get you out of the classroom and into the country.

Financial aid is available for eligible students. IPSL accepts the AmeriCorps Segal Education Award.
