Experience Sustainable Greece with IPSL’s “Mediterranean Diet and Lifestyle” Program
Typically offered in July | Optional 3 Academic Credits

Immerse yourself in the sustainable traditions of Greece through IPSL’s Mediterranean Diet and Lifestyle program, usually available only during the month of July. This enriching study abroad experience offers participants the opportunity to earn 3 academic credits while exploring one of the world’s healthiest and most celebrated ways of life. Designed to deepen your understanding of the Mediterranean diet and its scientifically recognized health benefits, the program combines academic study with hands-on learning. You’ll explore the theory behind the Mediterranean lifestyle, gaining insights from both local and international perspectives.

Participants engage in a dynamic blend of lectures, fieldwork, and cultural immersion. Topics covered include:

  • The history and evolution of the Mediterranean Diet

  • “Food as Medicine” and its modern relevance

  • Obesity trends in Mediterranean populations

  • The cultural role and health benefits of wine

  • Ancient wine varietals and their place in local traditions

Beyond the classroom, the program emphasizes experiential learning. Cooking workshops and specialty tastings give you firsthand experience with regional ingredients and traditional techniques. You’ll also examine the cultural and emotional factors that influence what we eat, how we eat, and how food shapes social interaction.
Set in a region that blends ancient history with modern life, and rural traditions with urban energy, this program offers a truly unique opportunity to live, learn, and grow. Whether you’re a student of health sciences, nutrition, anthropology, or just passionate about food and culture, your month in Greece will be filled with meaningful, exciting experiences centered on the Mediterranean way of life.

While each Greek meal is fresh and inviting, it is also a trip back through Greece's history.

In addition to lectures and cultural exploration, participants will take part in a variety of immersive, hands-on workshops, such as:

  • Mediterranean cooking classes led by local chefs

  • Olive oil tasting and sensory analysis, which may include a visit to a local orchard and a workshop on traditional olive oil soap making

  • Guided walks through surrounding hills and mountains, where you'll forage for herbs and medicinal plants and spend time with traditional healers

  • Visits to sustainable wineries, featuring curated wine and cheese pairings

  • Relaxation in natural hot spring baths, originally built during the Byzantine era under Emperor Justinian and dating back to 900 BC

These are just a few of the unforgettable experiences that make this program so enriching—offering a rare opportunity to engage with Greek culture, nature, and culinary heritage in a meaningful and lasting way.
