Experience South Africa: Transform Lives—and Your Own—in Cape Town
Nestled between the dramatic cliffs of Table Mountain and the wild waters of the Atlantic, Cape Town is a city like no other—vibrant, complex, and alive with history and hope. With its blend of cultures, cuisines, languages, and breathtaking natural beauty, Cape Town offers an unforgettable backdrop for a journey of learning, service, and self-discovery.

Meaningful Service, Deep Connection
Through IPSL’s partnership with a visionary South African nonprofit, you’ll support individuals overcoming homelessness, trauma, and mental health challenges. Work alongside experienced social workers in programs focused on healing, purpose, and community.

This unique rehabilitative program combines social work, community building, and holistic wellness. You’ll assist experienced professionals as they guide clients toward renewed self-worth, purpose, and connection. Your role matters—from helping lead group sessions and community wellness events to supporting urban farms, maker’s markets, and literacy and arts workshops.

Volunteer opportunities may include:

  • Youth development & leadership training

  • Health education (including HIV/TB testing and care)

  • Counseling and mental wellness workshops

  • Life skills education via mobile clinics (serving sex workers, inmates, and the houseless)

  • Sports, recreation, and arts-based community engagement

  • Sustainable urban farming and food distribution

  • Micro-enterprise and entrepreneurship training

Your placement will be tailored to your skills, interests, and career goals, as well as the needs of the community—ensuring an experience that’s both impactful and personal.

Academics That Matter
Courses are designed to give you a deeper understanding of South Africa’s past, present, and future. Through a rich blend of lectures, field experiences, and community conversations, you’ll explore the legacies of Apartheid, the ongoing journey toward equity, and how grassroots activism continues to shape society today.

Academic courses (all in English) explore South Africa’s complex history and resilient present, including:

Community Organizing & Activism in South Africa
Ethics & Community Health
Language Across the Curriculum
(Afrikaans or local indigenous language + independent project)

Whether you're pursuing a career in social work, public health, or global development—or simply seeking purpose—this is more than a study abroad program. It’s a launchpad for change. Financial aid is available to eligible students, and IPSL proudly accepts AmeriCorps Segal Education Awards.

Cape Town isn’t just a destination—it’s a living classroom, a place of profound transformation, and a launchpad for changemakers. Ready to step in?
