Ireland Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was worthwhile. I am much more aware of what I want to achieve with my painting and I want to continue to travel.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I thought the teaching methods were largely unhelpful to improving students' skills in painting. However, the best way students learn art is by experience, so this did not entirely ruin most students' academic experience.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

We shopped at the grocery stores in town and cooked for ourselves.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The pubs, shops, and local art galleries are fun. I spent a weekend in Dublin and others spent time in London, Paris, or Spain. I suggest organizing a weekend trip before getting to Ireland, because time will fly.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The program is only a month long, without much need to address student health issues. The only safety issue was the walk into town, throughout which there are several blind turns, so pedestrians need to cross the street to make sure they are seen.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Probably about 30-40 Euro on food per week, but it's hard to tell. (36-50 dollars American)
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cab fares to and from field trips can add up, the Lidl is the cheapest grocery store in town

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It is honestly up to you how much you get out of this experience. The professor was minimally helpful; If you want to go on weekend trips, you have to plan them and budget for them yourself. The same goes for painting. You have to be motivated if you want to excel, because the professor will not check up on you.
