ISA Study Abroad in Florence, Italy

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how much different America is than other countries. It was very interesting to see how much different the culture and education is. It was worthwhile because it really made me learn a lot about myself and opened my eyes at how large the world is.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My class was very relaxed compared to classes at Virginia Tech, but it was a new experience and was interesting to see how education is administered in another country.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Very helpful and were there for you at any time you needed them.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Our apartment was in a good location by the market and was very large and nice. It had wifi and a big living room for all my roommates to spend time together in.

* Food:

One of the reasons I wanted to come to Italy was for the food and I was not disappointed. I had many favorite places and some were just outside my apartment.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I probably could have gotten more into the Italian culture while abroad.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

When my roommate got sick, we went to the ISA on-site office, and the ISA workers made her a doctors appointment and walked us to the doctors office so we would know where it was. The doctor was very helpful and was able to get her medicine and had her feeling better in a couple of days.

* Safety:

I felt safe most of the time during the program, mostly because I knew the ISA staff was there if we needed them.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The food was not very cheap, although there were probably some cheap options, I spent a lot of money on my trip.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? about $120/week
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Take out a certain amount of money each week and try to stick to using only what you take out- budget well.
