Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The educational system was much more fun and manageable than the traditional schooling. We had lectures for an hour a few times, but most of our learning was hands on. Some of the things we did while learning were hiking, snorkeling, swimming, going to wildlife sanctuaries, zip-lining, having astronomy tours, and canoeing. Our main workload included two group presentations, and about six short essay questions due at the end of the program. I really enjoyed this different teaching method, and it helped me pay attention and learn more during the trip.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I had two instructors. One was a man named William and the other was a lady named Sonia. Both of them were very knowledgeable and accurate about everything they talked about and did. I enjoyed spending the month with them and they treated us like adults. Sonia was very motherly and everyone loved her and would go to her when feeling homesick. She could identify every type of Australian bird, which was amazing to me.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We had several different housing arrangements. First, we stayed at the Chancellor Lakeside near Bond Uni in Queensland. It was absolutely amazing. The Chancellor is a five star apartment complex. Everyone loved staying there because we had our own little apartments with a full kitchen, balcony, and everything else we ever needed. Next, we stayed at Binna Burra Mountain Lodge. It was an adjustment going from The Chancellor to here, but it was more of a camping accommodation. The cabins fit about six people in each one. After Binna Burra we went to Fraser Island and all the girls in the trip fit into a huge cabin with several different rooms. Once again we had our own kitchen and multiple bathrooms. The last place we stayed was on the island called Lady Elliot. The housing was little tent like cabins with bunk beds. Overall, we never spent much time in the rooms. Every place we went we were way too busy to be in the lodging places, so we mainly just slept there, but I loved every housing and they were all unique.

* Food:

The food was amazing, hence the weight put on during my trip. Everything was fresh and different from the American food. I ate a lot of Thai and fish. Also, meat pies and salad. Each cook from where we were staying amazed me with their cooking abilities.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The group I was with was 21 students total. We all got a long great, and became a little family during the trip. We still keep in touch and I miss them everyday.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The only time I felt unsafe was while snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef and saw a shark.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent about $2000 on souvenirs, food, taxis, alcohol, etc. So about $500 a week.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Everything over there is more expensive then you think, so bring extra money.
