Interstudy London: Best Decision I Ever Made Past Review

By (English and Studio Art, Marietta College) for

ISA Study Abroad in London, England

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about being independent and got a good glimpse of reality mixed in with the absolute fantasy. Many of my friends who went to places like Costa Rica and South Africa expected a lot of cultural differences, but said they were disappointed. I went to London, a place where they speak the same language and seem similar to us, but that's not the case at all. They speak English, not American-English. They have different beliefs and views on life. Every day I was surprised to find something different and new, and I wouldn't change that experience for the world.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I felt the workload was a challenge, but possible. I had to read a novel a week, which some were longer than others, but with my determination, I was able to finish them all. Part of me liked how most of the learning was dependent on me, but at the same time, I missed the structure and consistency of the United States. I prefer going to class more than once a week. I had fantastic professors, who were friendly and extremely helpful. Even though I was a foreigner, I did not hesitate to ask questions.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Interstudy made my trip effortless. They helped me through my first day and made sure I was all settled before letting me loose in London. They were always easy to contact, so if anything went wrong, I knew I could rely on them to help me, no matter what. I talked to other people in different programs, and learned that I had chosen wisely with Interstudy because other programs did not give so much attention to the students. They were alone in London, whereas I was not.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my flatmates and the flat itself was decent for a college flat. We had a lot of problems with the staff at the blocks because they were unreliable, would write us up for nothing, and were terribly rude. Getting our post from them was also a challenge because they were lazy about separating it, so I never knew if I would have any post or not. They also would not always be in the office, even though it's meant to be 24 hour service.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Interstudy took me to see the musical, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert as well as on a weekend trip to Ireland. These were both wonderful excursions because I really wanted to see a lot of theatrical performances while in London, and since I had already been to Ireland once, it was nice that they planned everything and I just got to enjoy it. We went hiking and horseback riding through Killarney, and it was absolutely unforgettable.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

On my first day, we talked a lot about safety and covered any and all situations while walking around London. If any new dangers appeared, we would be contacted via email or (for real emergencies) via our mobiles we acquired through the program. Although I knew how dangerous the city could be, thanks to my program I could be smart about my surroundings and keep myself safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Don't ever hesitate to ask questions. This is all new to you and the program knows that. They want to make it as easy as possible for you, but you need to tell them what confuses you before they can do their job the best. I would suggest anyone who is self-motivated, determined, and confident to join this program. You can be a little shy though, because the people are so friendly, they can connect with any type of person.

Fine Arts Practice I

Course Department: 2MMFA407.2
Instructor: Pip Thompson
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The most challenging part of this class was how the professors only said, "Just create. Experiment until something wonderful occurs." This is nothing like I ever experienced in the States. We would have at least an extremely vague assignment and see what would be the outcome. I accepted the challenge, and in the end enjoyed simply returning to my love of art to see what I may find. The only problem I had was that being the only American, they liked to point it out because I didn't know how the program worked. It made me feel uncomfortable and made it harder for me to blend into the module. I was always an outsider.
Credit Transfer Issues: I'm a little worried how this might transfer because it counts as two classes, and 8 credits. It's also a part of a larger program, so it might be better not to bother. I went through a lot of work to be accepted, and if your art skills aren't where they want you to be, you may not get in.

Writing London: Creative Writing about London

Course Department: 1ENL428.2
Instructor: Rowena McDonald
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This class really helps you learn more about London and get a feel for being a native instead of still being a foreigner. I enjoyed going in and discussing different writing techniques, while also adapting them to the English culture. It was more challenging than I expected because of this adaptation. I really had to try and understand the English culture to make my characters believable. The lecturer gladly helped with all of my pieces, and also gave great advice throughout the semester.
