My Amazing Experience in Malaga, Spain! Past Review

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload abroad was less than at my university at home, but it was still challenging enough to learn. There definitely wasn't as much homework. Usually we would have excercises in a book or worksheets and then one paper or presentation due at the end of the semester. The classes were smaller. There were about 8-12 students in each class.

On-site administration of your program

This program is awesome! The staff was so friendly and helpful. They were organized, well informed and were very supportive to all of the students. They were available for questions through email, phone and in the office. Our program had about 40 students. My expectations were met for sure.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was matched to a family and don't think I could have asked for anyone better! They were wonderful. It was a beautiful neighborhood right next to the beach and walking distance to class. It was about a 10-15 minute bus ride to the city center for shopping and nightlife. A lot of things were provided by the host family such as sheets, towels and food. I was treated like family. They made me feel at home and enjoyed getting to know me and spending time with me.

Overall the food was good. Breakfast was small, usually just toast and coffee. Lunch was the biggest meal of the day. It included 2 courses such as soup or salad and then a dish with meat, rice, fish, vegetables, etc. There was a good variety in their diet. Lunch was usually followed by fruit for dessert. Dinner was later than it is in America and was also light. The usual time for dinner was between 8-10.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We went on a few excursions and they were awesome! We visited Granada, Sevilla, Ronda, Madrid, Toledo and Cordoba. Three of them were overnight trips and the others were day trips. We got to see flamenco dancing, the Alhambra, royal palaces, cathedrals and some gorgeous views of different cities.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Malaga was a safe city overall. The most important thing is to use common sense. I did not witness any crime myself but I heard of things being stolen from other students in the program. Be careful with purses, phones, cameras, ipods or anything valuable because just like anywhere else there is a chance of it being stolen. When you're at a restaraunt, bar, or club never leave your things unattended. For girls, local men will try to talk to you or "cat call" you but from my experience it was harmless. There weren't any bg health issues in my host city and I did not need any vaccines.

My language acquisition improved by studying abroad. My understanding of the language and grammar is a lot clearer now and I can hold conversations much easier. I practiced language with my host family every day. I also practiced with professors and other students and some locals. I needed to use the host country language in everyday interactions because even though some people spoke English, the majority of people did not.
