Good experience, didn't learn as much Spanish as I intended Past Review
By Stacy E (Elementary Educaiton, University of North Dakota) for
ISA Study Abroad in San José, Costa Rica
Yes, it was worth while. I have had so many great experiences and meet a lot of really great people. However, overall I wasn't very satisfied with my trip because I wanted more of an authentic cultural experiences that I didn't feel I had. If I would do it again I would have signed up for a program that didn't offer any classes in English and I would have more opportunities to establish relationships with locals.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
My academic experience was very good. I was able to build on my Spanish speaking skills significantly. The professors were open to foreign exchange students and were fair in their grading assessment. Student were expected to always speak Spanish in the class (unless class was taken in English). Cultural experiences were also included in each course that I took such as trips to the market or dance clubs. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
My Host Country program was located in San Jose, Costa Rica. Our house was located a safe walking distance for the school.I was only dissapointed by the amount of Spanish speaking opportunities I had. Most speak either spoke English or wanted to learn so they insisted on speaking English. For people that are seriously about learning Spanish and need more immersion to learn I would recommend that they look for a different host location. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived with a host family that was mostly just a dad (the mom was on vacation). He was very gracious and took us around town to experiences different parts of the culture. The house was walking distance from the school and was mostly safe. We took precautions to always walk with someone at night or get a ride. Our school provided shuttle services for students that took the night dance class, so that everyone was safe. |
* Food: |
I mostly ate my host families food, which I thought was very yummy or I purchase my own food from the store or restaurants. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Honestly I didn't think it was the best cultural or social experience. I felt that everyone was well organized, but I expected to spend more time with locals and less time with American, however I spent most of my time with other study aboard students mostly because of the way the program was set up to separate us from the local students unless our language skills were advanced. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I didn't really experience any health issues so that wasn't really a problem for me. Students that did have problems informed me they were able to get care. I rated safety a three, only because San Jose is a city and in any city you need to take precautions. Overall, I had a safe and happy experience. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
Language acquisition improvement? |
I felt that the University itself did a outstanding job at pushing our language skills and opportunities. Unfortunately I felt that I was exposed to as much Spanish in a real life setting. I joined a conversation club in order to get more opportunities. Also, I pushed myself to talk to locals that only spoke Spanish. |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |

Intermedio 1: Gramatica Y conversacion |
Course Department: | SPN 201 |
Instructor: | unknown |
Instruction Language: | Spanish |
Comments: | This course was taught completely in Spanish. It included different projects, research and group work that you would typically do in a English Social Studies class. Therefore we were learning Spanish in a natural way. I have a lot of Spanish back, but I was never able to understand a lot of grammatical details until this class. Having the grammar explained in Spanish really helped with understanding. |

Comments: | This was an excellent course. The teacher show enthusiasm for teaching beyond what most teachers bring to the classroom. She always seemed to care about her students and brought learning to life in a classroom setting. I also felt that the class was a great way to learn more about the culture that I was living with. |
Credit Transfer Issues: | NO, I didn't need this class. I just took it because I had extra room because I was unable to enroll in the class that I desired. |

Comments: | This course was very extensive and involved a lot of hard work. Students were expected to speak, write and read Spanish at a high level. The grading was fair. Students were able to go on two field trips, one to a children's museum for a research project and the other was at the market. |
