Pura Vida in Costa Rica! Past Review
By Hayley B (Nursing., Pittsburg State University) for
ISA Study Abroad in San José, Costa Rica
I am much more confident in my spanish-speaking abilities. Since my program was only 5 weeks I wasnt able to fully envelop the language, but it was well worth it!! My experience made me more aware of the culture in many different aspects. Many things werent the same as back home, but adjusting wasnt too difficult. As a result, I will absolutely travel again and very likely return to Costa Rica.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
What drew me to study here was the program, but the Medical Spanish class didnt quite meet my expectations. It was geared toward healthcare professionals who would have already received their degree. The material required much more knowledge than an ordinary undergraduate in a healthcare major would have. Also, the Spanish courses were 5 hours every day, which made it difficult to find time to explore, nevertheless have energy or positive morale. The elective course was great though. The teacher was very knowledgeable and the coursework was very educational. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Always available to speak to either via email or in person. Very friendly. The ISA office was within a short walking distance. The weekend excursions were incredible and well planned. You definitely got a lot for your money with ISA. They also offered extra activities, such as cooking classes, movie nights, and other festivities to enhance our experience. They informed us of activities at the university and city that were all very fun and helped us to truly experience the culture. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Only about a 10 minute walk to campus. Sometimes we would walk to different places around town or take a taxi, which was really cheap. Our host family was awesome! Very loving, patient, kind, fun, and welcoming. Living conditions were always very clean. We only needed to purchase any snack foods or whatever we wanted for lunch. Breakfast and dinner was always provided and always delicious. |
* Food: |
Great food always. I recommend that during lunchtime, if you go to any of the "Soda's" (diner/small restaurant) to simply order the Plato de Dia (Plate of the Day). It's always the best bang for your buck. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
We explored allll over the country through ISA. Tamarindo gave us a true beach experience, Arenal is where we got to see a real volcano and rainforest, and Monteverde was heaven on the mountains where we got to see more rainforests. ISA and Tico Tours made each weekend a total blast! The activities I was able to participate in were bungee jumping over the Colorado River, surfing lessons and sailing on the Pacific, biking tour through the rainforest and around a volcano, zip-lining throughout the mountains and rainforests, and hiking through the rainforest. And there was still much more offered! Truly memorable experiences. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
The program and university educated us very well on safety and health. I personally never had any problems. You just have to be aware of your surroundings and be smart. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
Language acquisition improvement? |
We usually practiced with our host family members. Yes, I used it during my interactions at stores, markets, etc. Most people spoke Spanish, but the students without much Spanish background were still able to enjoy the culture with the help of the other students. |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | Make the most of every situation no matter how tired you may seem at times. Time flies and it's not very likely you'll be able to experience anything like this again. ISA was an excellent company, but I would have to say dont get your hopes up for the Medical Spanish & Healthcare program offered. Costa Rica was incredible though so definitely find another program to visit the country! |

Comments: | At first it was interesting because the workbook provided useful vocabulary. Then as the course went on, there wasnt very much new information. The teacher wasnt able to provide definitive answers to what the terminology meant which was challenging. I had to go purchase a Medical Spanish-English dictionary so that I was sure I could confidently apply the knowledge. The 5-hour long classes each day seemed fairly productive for about the first 2 or 3 hours and then for the remaining time it all seemed repetitive and filled with busy work that was not advancing much of my knowledge. We read straight out of the workbook, but the teacher never provided alternative resources or information of any kind that could facilitate or enhance our educational experience. Several of the exercises required us to know how to explain to a patient what a certain illness, disease, or procedure was, which was beyond our knowledge base because many of us were still working on our undergraduate degree. It might have been more easily directed towards students in medical school? |

Comments: | The readings provided in class were always interesting and educational. At times the reading workload was quite excessive in regards to only having 1 night to complete, but the class discussions were productive and helpful. The teacher was very knowledgeable with all of the topics and always answered any questions. I always felt comfortable to participate in class discussions and ask questions. The Spanish films (with English sub-titles) in class were very interesting and applicable to the material. I would definitely recommend this class and professor to others. :-) |
