On-site administration of your program

ISA is a wonderful go-between who takes care of difficult logistics. I was never worried that the details would not be covered. At some times I felt like I was not on my own enough but the benefit of such overseeing is that any problems are solved and the staff was extremely kind and willing to help.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I always felt safe in my neighborhood. No complaints aesthetically. I was very close to class, and close enough to nightlife to get a cheap taxi there. I did not need to buy any items to settle in. I was treated very well by my host family but it is by nature a bit of an awkward arrangement--one doesn't quite feel like family because it is a paid living situation but at the same time they are very kind and helpful and go beyond what the program description includes.

The food provided was always delicious and plentiful, but I wish there were an option to pay less and receive less meals.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I went to a political rally with my host uncle, many beautiful sites to see during the ISA program excursions, I went to a resort at the beach with Dominican friends for a weekend which was wonderful. I also got involved with a local church and they were very welcoming and provided great friendships and support throughout the trip.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Healthcare was alright. I got sick and doctors were hard to access and once I got back to the US my doctor was not sure the doctor who treated me there had covered all the bases and had diagnosed me incorrectly. However, the concern and help from the ISA staff was excellent, the support was all I could ask for and more. As far as safety goes, make good decisions and trust your instinct. Be very careful with who you meet and always err on the side of caution. Don't be afraid the whole time that something bad is going to happen, but be aware, keep good company, and learn to relax and enjoy yourself but stay safe at the same time.

I could practice language with professors, fellow students (both foreign and Dominican), people I met when I went out, people at church, etc. I definitely used Spanish in everyday interactions with my host family, anything I had to purchase anywhere, etc. Most people did not speak English, or much preferred to speak with me in Spanish.
