ISA Study Abroad in Sevilla, Spain

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely! Hands down one of the best, most memorable experiences ever. Take a journal and a really good digital camera, because you won't want to forget any of it.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My economics teacher was amazing! Not only was he easy to understand, he understood that we don't see the world Europeans do, so he made a lot of comparisons to help illustrate his points. Excellent instructor.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They are readily available and engaged in providing you with culturally rich activities, but they stay out of your way so you can have the experience you want.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

LOVED IT! And LOVED my Senora!! :) She was super sweet and welcoming and she still keeps in touch!

* Food:

Don't worry about telling your host family your likes and dislikes...they don't mind if you have different tastes than you. They just want you to enjoy your experience in their home country.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

SEVILLA IS AMAZING! I'm definitely going back. If you're visiting Spain or studying there, you absolutely must make time to be in Sevilla. It is rich with history, safe, beautiful (I crossed a river every day to get to class) and it is known for its artistic flare. And the nightlife is like nothing I've seen in the States.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Sevilla is smaller than Madrid with just under 1 million (about 850,000 I think), and doesn't have a high crime rate. I was always aware of my surroundings, but I never felt unsafe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Estimate around $150 per week.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Coins are easy to spend, but they are worth a lot more than ours here...keep that in mind.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Business Spanish
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I learned 20x more at my homestay than I did in my actual Spanish class while I was there.
