Sydney: Throw your cares and Bank Account to the wind! Past Review

ISA Study Abroad in Sydney, Australia

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This experience was totally worthwhile! I loved being abroad and seeing another part of the world. It was not all that I expected, which is part of the reason it was worthwhile. Every day was not rainbows and butterflies, but all the experiences made me grow as an independent adult. This abroad trip also reinforced my future plans of being an industrial designer and has made me want to travel more.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

In this system, the individual responsibility is far greater than at Berea College. The students are expected to do so much more outside work to really learn the material. The professors give a long list of suggested readings and expect that you do read these books, but they are never tested on the contents. Since there are very few grades, the students are especially stressed out during mid-terms and finals.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program, while abroad, was very hands-off. They allowed the students to venture out on their own and do what they wanted. This was both a strength and a weakness. The weakness part of this is that the students were lacking direction as to what needed to be done and were very scattered.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The house was excellent. The neighborhood was friendly and very secure and the location was superb: it was located 5 minutes walk from the beach and from a major public transport bus stop. The major problem I had with the arranged living was that I was placed with 20 Americans and 3 Scandinavians-there were no locals around.

* Food:

The food at the grocery was excellent! It was high quality and had no preservatives/additives in it. When I did eat out, the food there was also above average-even the take-away.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

My orientation in Cairns was amazing!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt the city was very secure to walk around at night either in a group or by myself to walk home.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $120. Food-around $40 a week Transport- $40 a week Anything additional was expensive and should be worked into your budget. Small things that do not really cost that much in the US cost there-such as alcohol ($40 for 700mL at an alcohol shop-$4-$10 a beer at the pub or as high as $15 a mixed drink at a club), sodas (around $3 a can), cigarettes ($15 a pack), and rent (cheapest: $150/week).
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Transport. Public transportation in Sydney is pretty expensive. A $40 weekly pass is unlimited rides on any public transport method and is well worth the money if you can not walk to city centre. Otherwise, it's $30 for 10 bus rides or around $4 a train ride.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? My advice would be to carefully plan out your budget and STICK TO IT. I think a very independent student would love this program and any that wishes to be independent. This program is very un-supervised and the student is responsible for basically everything.
